With a heritage that stretches back over six decades, the Transporter is firmly established as the backbone of Volkswagen’s commercial vehicle range. The brand’s best-selling model in the UK and worldwide, the modern-era T5 has achieved sales of more than one million since its launch in 2003. With the T5’s predecessors factored in, the Transporter has clocked up a production total of more than 10 million since 1949.

Bold, confident design

The current T5 arrived in UK Volkswagen Van Centres in January 2010. In addition to featuring Volkswagen’s bold design language, the Transporter benefits from such enhancements as a daytime running function for the headlights, the latest-generation ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) and optional Lane Change Assist.

Broad engine range

Power is provided by Volkswagen’s acclaimed four-cylinder, 2.0-litre, common-rail TDI engine. Economical and refined, it complies with EURO5 emissions standards, and comes with five power output options: 84PS, 102PS, 114PS, 140PS and twin-turbo 180PS. Volkswagen’s seven-speed DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) and/or 4MOTION four-wheel drive are offered with 140 and 180PS models, giving the Transporter one of the most advanced drivetrain ranges in the sector.

BlueMotion technology

Volkswagen’s commitment to reducing running costs for owners and operators extends to the whole Transporter range. In addition to offering some of the cleanest and most efficient engines in the sector, the Transporter range includes an ultra-frugal BlueMotion model (SWB only) fitted with a host of fuel-saving technologies and features. Customers can also choose BlueMotion Technology models that come equipped with a number of Volkswagen’s acclaimed BlueMotion features.

Loadspace options

The Transporter is available as a panel van with a short or long wheelbase and a low, medium or high roof. The kombi seats up to six, while the window van and shuttle both take up to nine people. Four gross vehicle weights are available (2,600, 2,700, 2,800, 3,000 and 3,200 kg), with payloads of 694-1,340 kg, and load volumes of 5.8-9.3 m3. With its low floor height of 566 mm plus enough room for two Euro pallets in the short-wheelbase Transporter, it will come as no surprise that the long-wheelbase can fit three such pallets with room to spare.

Extensive range

Four trims are offered: Startline, Trendline, Highline and the range-topping Sportline. In addition, there is a comprehensive range of options and accessories to ensure each Transporter meets the customer’s requirements exactly.

The current Transporter was the first Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle to receive an environmental commendation from TÜV Nord, the international inspection organisation, in recognition of the ecological advances made over the previous model. The commendation acknowledges how vehicles, components and processes are more environmentally friendly and include the entire lifecycle of the vehicle.
