an apple a day' golf bluemotion claims top green champion title

Nov 16, 2011

Less than a fortnight after being named ACFO’s Green Vehicle of the Year, the Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion has romped home with another top environmental accolade, having claimed the Gold Winner for Larger Family Cars as well as the overall Green Champion title at the Green Apple Environment Awards.

The awards were presented on Monday at the House of Commons and are voted for by members of the Midlands Group of Motoring Writers who judge the competing vehicles on the basis of frugality and green credentials as well as the ability to entertain drivers.

The Golf BlueMotion – which is powered by a 1.6-litre 105 PS common rail TDI engine offering a combined fuel economy of 74.3 mpg and CO2 emissions of 99 g/km – won both its category and the overall award after polling many more votes than any other car.  One judge cited achieving 82 mpg on a ‘leisurely motorway trip’ and 57 mpg ‘on the way home going as quickly as prudence allowed’.

Another judge summed up by saying simply: ‘It really does work.  Out of all the cars here, the Golf BlueMotion is the most impressive all-rounder and returns amazing economy figures in practice – while also remaining exceedingly practical and good to drive.’

Earlier in the summer, the Golf BlueMotion claimed What Car? magazine’s Small Green Family Car accolade and Auto Express gave the Volkswagen BlueMotion range its Green Award honour.  In other categories at the Green Apples, the Tiguan was placed second in the Small SUV and 4x4 class.
